Supporting Our Community Amidst the Tragic Death of Lia Smith

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Lia Smith, a beloved trans woman in our community. Lia’s life touched those around her, and her passing has left many of us feeling deep sadness, confusion, and grief. We know that this kind of loss can deeply affect our community in many different ways. We want everyone to know: you are not alone, and there is space here for you.

At SafeSpace Anti-Violence Program we are committed to showing up for one another in moments of pain. We are here to offer support, to hold space for grief, and to care for one another as we navigate this loss together. Every trans person deserves to live a life filled with safety, belonging, and love — and that commitment remains at the heart of our work.

While we know details are still emerging, we understand that Lia’s death was self-inflicted, and we want to acknowledge the weight that carries. Many in our community know too well the pain of losing someone to internalized violence or despair. These losses do not exist in isolation — they are shaped by the transphobia, rejection, and systemic barriers that so many trans people face every day. As we grieve Lia, we also recommit to building a world where trans lives are cherished, supported, and sustained.
